feb 28, 1965 - Malcom X

Description:

Malcolm X was a Black leader who, as a key spokesman for the Nation of Islam, characterised the "Black Power" philosophy. By the early 1960s, he had grown angry with the nonviolent, struggle for civil rights and worried that African-Americans would ultimately lose control of their own movement. In February 1965, he was killed by members of the Nation of Islam after he left the organization. But even in death, his teachings lived on in the rhetoric of other Black Power organizations including the Black Panther Party. As a young man, Malcolm Little, who was later renamed as Malcolm X, drifted between Boston and New York, cherishing his image as "Detroit Red," a pimp and a dangerous hustler. While in prison for a robbery, he educated himself and converted to the Muslim faith. When Malcolm was released he became active in the Nation of Islam, a Black Muslim organisation committed to Black rights and equality. He quickly climbed the ladder of the party and found himself as National Minister, speaking on behalf of the organisation in cities across the country.
