On February 26, 2012, Trayvon Martin a 17-year-old black teenager was shot and killed by police officer George Zimmerman. The Black Lives Matter movement started after the acquittal of George Zimmerman and they continue to protest the deaths of other black men and women. Wards says that she "laugh[s] when people say we live in post-racial times" (Carde). "The Fire This Time" edited by Ward is dedicated to Trayvon Martin and focuses on his story and many other injustices black people in America face.
