sep 17, 2013 - "Men We Reaped" published

Description:

Ward's memoir titled "Men We Reaped" was published in 2013. It was her hardest book to write because it chronicles the four years between 2000 and 2004 in which five very important men in her life died. She knew she had to be vulnerable in order to write a memoir and it took a while for her to be ready. While at first, she felt that their deaths were unrelated she realized that poor black people, in the South specifically are told that their lives do not matter. Ward says this caused them to
"[drink] too much, [smoke] too much" and be "abusive to [themselves, and] to each other" (Tillman). Ward wrote this novel in order to shine a light on injustices that continue to affect poor black communities.

The second picture shows some of the men whose lives and deaths are described in "Men We Reaped". In the third picture, Ward stands at the grave of her cousin whose death she also discusses in "Men We Reaped".
