In the fall of 1995, Jesmyn Ward became the first person in her family to attend college. She enrolled at Standford University and received her bachelor's in English and a master's degree in communication. While Ward enjoyed Standford and the beautiful Bay area, which was very different from her hometown, she also felt like an outsider and missed her community in DeLisle. She was surrounded by white kids who did not understand their privilege while young black people in her hometown began to die.
