mar 5, 570 - Icons- Monastery of St. Catherine

Description:

Icon of the Blessing Christ (Pantokrator)

Given to monastery by Justinian. Pantokrator, translated "Ruler of all," imagery shows Christ holding a book representing the Law and Himself as the Word and holding up a hand in blessing. His face shows contrasting characteristics: one side is merciful, the other is strong and to be feared.

Icon of the Theotokos and Child, with saints and angels

The Virgin Mary is shown in imperial garb with purple robes and red shoes. She and Christ are flanked by military saints, George and Theodore, as royal guards.

Icon of St. John the Baptist with Deesis (6th or 7th c)

Shown with a wild beard, a suit of animals skins, showing him to be an antitype of Elijah. He is also identified by the scroll he holds, reading "Behold the Lamb of God." Images of Christ in His humanity and the Blessed Virgin Mary in medallions to his left and right form a deesis, or "prayer." The representation of Christ Incarnate rather than as a Lamb could anticipate the decree of the 82 Canon of the Quinisext Council of 692.

Revelant Terms: Encaustic, 82 Canon of the Quinisext Council of 692, Theotokos, Council of Ephesus 431
