Patchett had missed some school before moving to Nashville and her parents had just been divorced. In first grade, Patchett's reading and writing skills were lacking, and Sister Nina DeMatteo, her teacher, took it upon herself to tutor the young Patchett during recess. Although she thought it was cruel at first, Patchett now realizes the invaluable gift that Sister gave her all those years ago.
