Jesmyn Ward was born in 1977 in DeLisle, a small town in Mississippi close to the Gulf Coast. Her mom worked as a maid, while her dad worked occasional factory jobs and raised pit bulls for dogfights. He left her family when she was young. Her family did not have a lot of money especially throughout her early years and at one point she moved into her grandmother's house where she was living with 13 other members of her family. Although this was a difficult time for her family Ward says that it was also "one of the happiest times of her life" (Allardice). Her hometown and early life became the bases for many of her books which focus on black families plagued with poverty and confronted with racism for society.
In the first picture, Ward is outside of her great-grandmother's house in Mississipi where she lived for a period of time during her childhood. In the second picture, Ward is talking with her uncles in the house where she grew up. The third picture shows DeLisle on a map.
