Description:

The NHL's first outdoor game, the heritage classic, was played between the Edmonton Oilers and the Montreal Canadiens which was held in Edmonton Alberta at Common Wealth Stadium. The Canadiens won 4-3. The fans set a record for largest capacity of 57,167 in attendance during the -20 degree weather. The success from this event created the winter classic which takes place annually.
