Description:

Alongside the Hollywood Industry, the film industry in India became increasingly popular.

Early movies created in India were mainly politically or socially motivated, and were relevant to the country at thr time. Some notable films include V.Santharam’s Duniya 'Na Maane' (1937), and Franz Osten’s 'Achut Kanya' (1936).

Invention of new technology:
- Alam Ara (1931) became the first Indian “talkie” movie to be released in cinemas.
- Sairandhri (1933) became India’s first colour film, however it was processed in Germany.
The first Indigenous-made colour film was Kisan Kanya (1937), and was made by Ardashir Irani.
- The most iconic film of this time period is Devdas (1935). This film is renowned because it was one fo the first Indian films to portray ordinary people, affected by the rigid goverment that was prevalent at the time in India. It was the first time that many people had seen themseleves portrayed accurately in entertainemnt.
