After Napolean invaded Portugal, the entire monarchy moved to Brazil. After Napolean left, Prince Dom Pedro stayed behind when the royals moved back to Portugal. Following popular pressure for independence, he declared Brazil an independent state with himself as king in 1822 (Exact date unknown)
