o Humans are the only host
o 5 to 7 can get infected
o Herd immunity: if 95% of the population are vaccinated, the disease transmission can potentially be stopped
o Kids are more prone
• Transmission/Symptoms:
o Fecal-oral-transmission
o Infantile Paralysis
• Treatment:
o Iron Lung
o Vaccine
♣ Inactive Polio Vaccine which are not live and produces protective antibodies in the blood
♣ Oral Polio Vaccine which stimulates antibodies to all three types of poliovirus
• Not eradicated but Types 2 & 3 are
• Historical Events:
o 1580 BCE: first described in Egypt
o 1916: 27,000 causes in the US with over 6,000 deaths
o 1952: Worst polio outbreak in US with 58,000 reported cases
o 1963: Albert Sabin’s oral polio vaccine licensed
