o Yersinia Pestis bacterium
o Virus
o Requires a host cell
o Fatality rate can be around 10% or higher
o Humans are the only host
o Herd immunity
• Transmission/Symptoms:
o Breathe in Virus which he pathogen then lands on respiratory mucosal cells
o Fever, flu-like symptoms, rash
o Variola Major: most severe
o Variola Minor: less severe
o Airborne droplets, person to person contact, and direct contacts with fomites
• Treatment:
o Variolation: purposefully infect with smallpox to create a mild infection to create immunity
• Eradicated
• Historical Events:
o 1519: Fall of the Aztec Empire where the spread of disease killed more Aztecs then swords
o 1896: Edward Jenner discovered and introduced the first vaccination for smallpox
o 1977: Last naturally occurring smallpox patient
o 1978: Lab accident causes a few infections
