A period of intense snowstorms were believed to have triggered avalanches, that buried Lahual valley under almost 6 meters of snow, killing around 254 villagers. The trees of nearby forests played an important role, and helped stabilize snow packs and stopped small avalanches.
The citizens of Lahual Valley in India are very protective of their regional forests, amd consider the trees in the forest to be their "guardians", because the trees shielded them against the rage of the deadly, destructive avalanches.
