Sank between Indonesia and Christmas Island. An estimated 146 children, 142 women and 65 men drown. After having spent close to 24 hours in the ocean, 44 survivors were rescued by two Indonesian fishing boats and taken back to Indonesia. Many of the women and children who died were attempting to reunite with husbands and fathers in Australia who were on TPVs, and therefore unable to sponsor their families for resettlement.
