The independence movement in Argentina was a result of Enlightenment ideas spreading to Latin America as well as the Peninsular war whcih was a civil war in Spain between Nepoleon and the Spanish government. The people of Argentina wanted to govern themselves, so on July 9, 1816 Argentina became independent from Spain with the help of Jose de San Martin. Because of Argentina declaring independence, the viceroyalty seperated and Argentina was disunited until 1880 because of the power struggle between Buenos Aires and the rest of the country. To add, almost all of the western hemisphere was free from European rule by 1825.
