Description:

Mexico became independent from Spain on August 24, 1821 with the help of Father Miguel Hidalgo. The Mexican revolution was based on Enlightenment ideas, a want for women's rights, and the French Revolution. When Napoleon put his brother on the Spanish throne, peasant uprisings broke out in Mexico because Mexicans thought they could govern themselves (take power from the pro-creole viceroy of Mexico). After the revolution, the church remained in power, but people were given a voice in government.
