The DOI was a document created after the battle at Concord and it was a formal declaration that the colonies were now independent from Britain. By saying this the document also implied that all who signed the document were willing to do whatever it takes to ensure sovereignty, even war. It was written by Thomas Jefferson and others that assisted, after its creation representatives from all colonies came together and signed it. By signing the declaration the colonists were taking the deadly risk of committing treason.Added to timeline:
