sep 13, 1759 - Battle of the Plains of Abraham

Description:

The battle of the Plains of Abraham was a decisive battle fought between the British, and French in North America during the French and Indian War (Seven Years War North American Theater). It was a pivotal moment in deciding Canada's future History. The battle was fought between the British General James Wolfe, and the French commander Marquis de Montcalm. The Battle started with Wolfe forming ranks on the Plains of Abraham. Montcalm then decided to sally out of his well defended position on the high ground to charge Wolfe before organizing. This was a mistake. Wolfe British regulars were far superior in training, and combat experience then France's militia. Wolfe's regulars held their line halting the French charge. General James Wolfe was shot three times during the battle, and died on the field. Montcalm was also injured during the fighting, and later too succumbed to his wounds. The British would then go on to defeat the French forces at the Plains of Abraham. Upon hearing this while dying, Wolfe said, "Now, God be praised, I will die in peace.” This battle signified the end of New France, as Quebec City being captured gave the British a strong grasp on New France, and the St. Lawrence leading to eventual defeat of the French, and ownership over all of North America.
