jan 1, 1608 - Quebec City Founded
Description:
In 1608 Samuel de Champlain established the first European settlement in Canada. The settlement was on the Saint Lawrence river where Champlain built a fort. Today Samuel de Champlain Settlement is called Quebec City. This settlement was important as it gave access to more of the interior of Canada, and made Quebec (Province) the central hub for the fur trade. This fort settlement marked the true beginning of New France as it was the first settlement, and the capital.
