may 24, 1896 - Magician and Filmmaker George Meiles released his first film.

Description:

Because of his history in magic, he was able to create illusions in his films as special effects. He revolutionised the use of illusion to use as special effects in films. These illusions were the equivalent to CG in an early form. This dramatically accelerated the advancements in technology as people took inspiration from his illusional style of filmmaking. This leads to the extreme evolution in special effects and became a popular aspect in film to this day.
He has influenced filmmakers today e.g. Chris Carter, director of x-files who took inspiration from his style and used these effects for the sci-fi genre.

The French director techniques like:

-Superimposition of images: The placing of an image/video over an already existing image or video (The moon's face).

-Fading: The shifting between scenes by fading from one scene to another (moon fades into double exposure of moon in backdrop).
^
-Double exposure: The method of making one image more transparent than the other (shows almost a mystical effect of the moon when in the background)

-Scale models: The representation of an object that is larger or smaller than the actual size (The ship they fly to the moon in).
