may 30, 1889 - The kinetoscope was invented by Thomas Edison.
AND
Attempted to exploit his invention.
Description:
Edison invented the kinetoscope, a way to project a reel of film by looking through a peephole meaning it was only usable for individual people. Because of this the cinematographe was invented later on in 1895
AND
Thomas Edison decided to charge large amounts of money for a foot of film. This resulted in filmmakers moving away, where his filmic exploits were not implemented. This limited filmmakers dramatically as it means that a filmmaker will need extreme commitment in making films as to do so cheaply they had to move away from home in order to make films without being caught in Edison's exploits.
