Liberty was a sloop (small ship) owned by John Hancock; customs official who boarded Liberty demanded duty be paid on the entire cargo, breaking the blind-eye agreement that had kept peace between cargo owners and customs inspectors; Liberty's captain seized the official and locked him in the ship's brig while unloading the entire cargo; the incident caused Liberty to be ordered to be seized; resulted in an angry mob appearing on the docks that beat customs officials and destroyed property of other officials
