jun 22, 1807 - Chesapeake-Leopard Incident

Description:

The American commander of the Chesapeake, James Barron, refused to allow the British to search the ship, so the British opened fire in response. To this, Barron surrendered, permitting four men to be dragged onto the Leopard and taken by the British. As a result, many people called for war despite Jefferson and Madison's efforts to keep the peace. Monroe was sent to Britain to discuss the renouncement of impressment, but the British refused.
