Description:

(1480?-1521)
Ferdinand Magellan was born in Portugal to a noble family. At a young age, he back to fight in the Portuguese Navy, fighting battles across India and the East Indes. Ferdinand later became a important part in the conquering of the Moluccas, which produced many valuable spices for Portugal. After the King of Portugal denied a pay raise multiple times, Magellan gave up his nationality and started to work for Spain. In 1519 The King of Spain, Pope Alexander VI gave Magellan funding to find what islands were in control of Spain. Magellan set off westward and planned to cross the Americas to the spice islands and India. The treck across the Atlantic had gone smoothly for Magellan except for a Mutiny that had caused one of Magellan’s five ships to go abandoned. After crossing the Atlantic and entering the Pacific, Magellan and his crew faced hardships, food and water ran low and caused many sailors to die of scurvy. A storm had caused other ships to crash into the coast and sink. Once reaching the Philippines, one of the remaining three ships was burnt down and the rest sailed for the spice islands. A skirmish with local islanders left Magellan dead. After starting the trek back to Spain, one of the ships began to leak and was abandoned, the last ship, the Victoria came back to Spain and successfully circumnavigated the globe.
