(1475-1519)Vasco de Balboa, born in Spain, left for North America in his early 20s and settled in the island of Hispaniola. A decade later they sailed a colony in modern-day Columbia, they found the colony to be mostly abandoned, and Balboa persuaded its survivors to come with him and his ships. In 1512 Balboa set out on an expedition to find a “great ocean with gold on its shores” ("Britannica School ." School.eb.com. N. p., 2018. Web. 9 Oct. 2018.) After reaching the Pacific Ocean, Balboa and his crew claimed it for Spain and set back for his colony.
