feb 18, 1817 - Hindu college (Presidency)

Description:

Set up by David Hare (Scottish watchmaker and philanthropist in Bengal, India), RamMohan Roy and Radhakrishan Deb. Hare believed in secular schools teaching mother tongue and English, spreading English literature. RamMohan Roy pitched for diffusion of European education and knowledge for Indian countrymen. He opposed setting up of Sanskrit college in Calcutta – emphasized mathematics, natural philosophy, chemistry, anatomy and other useful sciences.

Hindoo College was open to all sections of society. Students could take up any desired branch available for study. In 1854, the Hindu college was converted to Presidency college.
