jan 12, 1565 - Henry Hudson

Description:

(1565?-1611)
Henry Hudson was born in England, with not much known about his early life. In 1607 he was captain of a ship with a crew of 10 men to find a sea route to East Asia through the North Pole. The route, however, was blocked by sea ice and they were forced to return to England. The next year he attempted another voyage across modern-day Russia, but sea ice blocked his ship once more. On his third voyage, he traveled up a river in modern-day New York and attempted to cross through the continent of North America, this however ended in failure and he sailed back to England. This river would later be called the Hudson River, after the explorer. On Hudson’s last voyage, he attempted to go through modern-day Canda, with frigid temperatures and supplies running dangerously low, the crew mutinied against Hudson and sent him, his son and seven others in a small raft, and were not seen again. The surviving crew made it back to England and were tried for mutiny, but were found innocent.
