(1543?-1596)Francis Drake was born near Tavistock, Devonshire. In his early 20s, he had started working on slave ships, when on one voyage near Mexico, Spanish ships attacked his fleet and killed many of his men. In 1577, Francis was given authorization from Queen Elizabeth to sail across the world to gather spices and treasure. 3 years later he returned to England from a successful voyage and was granted knightship by Queen Elizabeth. Then in 1585, a fleet of Spanish ships was sent to invade England, Sir Francis Drake successfully wared off the invaders. Becoming a hero among other Englishmen.
