Bartholomeu Dias, born in Portugal had set off on his first voyage. On August 1487, With authorization from Prince Henry, he set off to find a route around Africa to India. He had sailed down the western coast of Africa past the mouth of the Congo River when his ships were hit with a storm. After losing sight of the coast for several days. After turning east and finding no land he had turned north and saw land beyond the Cape of Good Hope. Unknowingly he had rounded the tip of Africa, With his crew entering the Indian Ocean and lost, they forced Dias to turn back. Dias later returned to Portugal in December 1488. On another voyage to the Cape of Good Hope, Dias and his ships encountered harsh storms and all of the crew and Dias drowned.
