Marco Polo was born in Venice, Italy. His father and uncle were merchants who would make long distance voyages from Europe to as far away as Northern China. On one voyage they took Marco and made a trip across Asia to Shangdu. The polos had soon met the emperor, Kublai Khan and became friends with the emperor. The polos became very wealthy in China and Marco was sent all over the empire to meet with local peoples and learn about their lives. In 1292 the Polos were escorted with a Princess back to Venice. After arriving in Persia, the Polos traveled the rest of the trip by land and ended up being robbed of most of their riches along the way. After arriving back in Venice after 24 years, Marco was captured by militia on a trading ship near Genoa. He was put in a Genoese prison where he wrote a book of his life in China and his travels.
