As tensions increase, conflicts break out between the Muslims and the Croats, causing the destruction of much of Mostar, including the Old Bridge. The bridge was an iportant landmark for the city since it was built by the Ottomans in the 16th century and it symbolized Bosnia's cultural diversity. Muslims and Serbs form an alliance against Croats in Herzegovina, rival Muslim forces fight each other in north-west Bosnia, Croats and Serbs fight against Muslims in central Bosnia. UN creates safe havens for Bosnian Muslim civilians.
