- Planted a cross and claimed the land in the name of France
- Kanata = Iroquois term for settlement
- Attempted to set up a colony but disease, lack of supply, and problematic relations with Iroquois led to abandonment of a settlement (kidnapped sons of Iroquoian leaders; did not go well)
