Description:

In 1898 Rutherford studied radiation emitted by uranium and during his experimentation he discovered two types of radiation which he called alpha and beta.

By allowing radiation from uranium to pass through layers of metal foil he discovered that:
Beta particles have greater penetrating power than alphas.

By direction of both the rays movements he realized: Alpha particles are positively charged.

By measuring the ratio of the rays mass to charge he deduced: That alpha particles are helium ions carrying 2+ charge. .
