oct 23, 1956 - Hungarian Uprising

Description:

From 1945 onwards, Hungary had been under the control of Moscow, with Stalin appointing its leader Matyas Rakosi. Following Stalins death in 1953, Rakosi was removed from power, and along with a poor harvest, banning of religion, and immense poverty (due to Russia collecting most of their resources from Hungary, because of their intervention), the Hungarian uprising took place.

Here students and workers took to the streets to present the '16 points', protesting personal freedom, the provision of more food, removal of the AVO (Secret police), etc.

Imre Nagy would be appointed as the new leader, and independent minded Communist, introduced a new multi-party system in Hungary, as well as appealed to Western states for aid. This would also cause the mobilisation of Soviet forces, with the USSR shortly putting 30,000 troops into the country.

Western Allies would not intervene, not planning to save Nagy, as they feared risking Nuclear warfare.
