Description:
In 1849, Vancouver Island was granted to the Hudson's Bay Company for colonization and in 1851, the first governor was appointed to the new colony. James Douglas was an official of the company until he was appointed as the governor. In 1856 Douglas established a legislative assembly for Vancouver Island.
