The United States purchased Alaska from the Russians for Russia lacked the financial resources to protect its interest in the region. And rather than sell Alaska to the British, on of its European rivals, Russia approached the United States. The American Civil War delayed this sale but eventually, Alaska was sold for $7.2 million or about $165 million in current Canadian dollars.
