Description:
When other nations started to threaten Portugal's control of the area did the government start sending people to live in Brazil. in 1534 the land was divided into 15 hereditary captaincies to populate the country and develop the cultivation of sugarcane. In 1548 Portugal's kings establish the first centralized government to manage the captaincies.
