The 1730s marked the beginning of the two competing movements: the Great Awakening and the Enlightenment. The Great Awakening was the revival of Puritan ideals including predestination while the Enlightenment was the introduction of the ideal of determining one's own path and not having to rely on God as strongly as before. These two movements clashed.
