Nelson Mandela received a Nobel Peace Prize for his work for the peaceful termination of apartheid regime and for creating foundations for a new democratic South Africa. Nelson Mandela was the first non-white head of state in South Africa and first to take this position following the dismantling of the apartheid system. Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years for conspiring to overthrow the state because they were violating the human rights to black South Africans.
