Description:

Asiatick society was established by Sir William Jones to encourage oriental studies. It was supported by governor general Warren Hastings. It became a centre for Asian studies. Society’s initiatives led to deciphering old inscriptions like Brahmi. Field of comparative philology was established as discipline in India. Pioneers of Indology like Charles Wilkins and Alexander Hamilton worked at the Society.
