Spirited away was ranked as one of the most important films of the early 2000s in it's role for introducing Western audiences to the legendary Hayao Miyazaki. It managed to trump 'Titanic' as the highest grossing film of all time in Japan and became the first Japanese hand-drawn film to win an Academy Award in the US. Miyazaki personally drew on over 80,000 individual frames. His dedication to the art of animation and his style and precision has inspired thousands of animators/animations today. He often wouldn't even finish the script, but would rather let his work create itself and play out organically, reflecting a deeply personal connection and character with his films that are an inspiration to watch.
The film features a strong, courageous young girl who is tasked to face the world- Only now is Disney and other animators catching on, creating films like 'Frozen' and 'Brave' with similar plots. His films have always been diverse and progressive.
John Lasseter (CEO of Pixar and director of 'Toy story') said in an interview
“Miyazaki is one of the greatest filmmakers of our time. At Pixar, when we have a problem and we can’t seem to solve it, we often take one of Mr. Miyazaki’s films and look at a scene in our screening room for a shot of inspiration. And it always works! We come away amazed and inspired. Toy Story owes a huge debt of gratitude to the films of Mr. Miyazaki.”
The Guardian, “Miyazaki’s stories are frequently considered children’s fare but they are deeper than they look – like the best fairy tales, they conceal dark, very adult themes beneath their surfaces.”
Time Magazine, “Miyazaki has been crafting films more lusciously illustrated and rapturously imaginative than almost anything else on the silver screen.”
His style is so unique and beautiful and inspired the love and want for more animations similar. He set a bar for what animation could be; deep, powerful, beautiful but still fun and mezmerizing.
