The Freedom Journal was the first all African newspaper in the U.S. and was created in New York, New York by two free born Africans, John Russwurm and Samuel Cornish on March 16, 1827. Their desire was to provide a different perspective compared the white monopoly on media during this time, while also helping to educate the black community.
