The illegal capturing would not have been an issue for the Portuguese if they succeeded in bringing their 553 captives to the Spanish colony of Cuba, but Joseph Cinque, one of the 53 slaves illegally captured on British land, organized a mutiny of armed-resistance with the others that were captured.
