Description:
During February of 1839, Portuguese slave hunters captured 53 Africans from Sierre Leone. Decades before the Slave Trade Act, initiated in 1807, abolished the slave trade throughout the British empire. Since Sierre Leone was a British colony at the time, the Portuguese had committed an illegal act on British land.
