jun 13, 1872 - Robert Koch

Description:

Accomplishments: He was able to grow anthrax bacteria in an ox eyeball. Proves the Germ Theory of Disease. Koch's Postulates: proves diseases can be transferred.
Observation created: If you grow anthrax bacteria and inject it into healthy cattle, they get sick.
Hypothesis created: The bacteria causes disease

Koch's Postulates:
- The bacteria must be present in every case of the disease.
- The bacteria must be isolated from the host with the disease and grown in pure culture.
- The specific disease must be reproduced when a pure culture of the bacteria is inoculated into a healthy susceptible host.
- The bacteria must be recoverable from the experimentally infected host.

Unfortunately sometimes these will not hold up if certain conditions apply. Such as:

- The particular bacteria (ex: Leprosy) cannot be grown in pure culture in the laboratory
- There is no animal model of infection with that particular bacteria
