In this election the democrats nominated Grover Cleveland once again, while the republicans chose former senator of Indian Benjamin Harrison. When it came to the popular vote, it was Cleveland that won, but Harrison won the electoral college and therefore was elected president. This election established the Republicans as the party of high tariffs, which most Democrats heavily opposed.
