jan 1, 1884 - Grover Cleveland v. James G. Blaine

Description:

This election had the republicans divided amongst three different types of groups and had the democrats win their first election since 1856. The three groups that the republicans were divided into were the Mugwumps, Stalwarts, and Half-Breeds, each group supporting something different. The republicans finally nominated James G. Blaine whose honesty was doubtful due to a scandal that he was involved in. The democrats chose New York governor Grover Cleveland which created a very viscous campaign as the republicans found out that Cleveland had fathered a child out of wedlock. Republicans teased and made fun of this until Cleveland started to show his support to his son. In a very close race, it was Grover Cleveland who won the election.
