The two candidates for this election was Republican James A. Garfield in a compromise choice against the former Civil War General, Winfield Scott Hancock. Both parties equivocated on the currency issues and both endorsed civil service reforms. They both also supported generous pensions for veterans and the exclusion of Chinese immigrants. The Republicans favored protective tariffs, while the democrats called for “revenue only.” In the end, Garfield came out on top and won the election.
