Description:

World War 1 began when Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated by a Yugoslav. This led Austria to declare war on Serbia which then led many other countries to declare war on each other. The war drew in all of the economic powers and was divided between two assembled alliances; The Allies which consisted of Triple Entente of Russia, the French Third Republic, the United Kingdom of Great Britain, Ireland, and later in the war Italy, Japan, and America joined the Allies. The Central Powers consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and later the Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria. The war took place on the western front of Europe and lasted between 1914 and 1918. When the war ended with the Allies winning, many empires did not exist, national borders were redrawn, and the German colonies were split among the victors. The war also led to the creation of the League of Nations.
