jan 3, 1899 - Boxer Rebellion
Description:
The Boxer Rebellion began when a group of Chinese men took up arms against foreign invaders and tried to rid China of the Christian religion. The men were known as “Boxers” because many of their men took place in martial arts or things like boxing. The war took place between the Eight-Nation Alliance and some of the Chinese government that supported the Boxers. The war was fought in China because the Boxers, who believed they were invulnerable to foreign weapons, wanted to get rid of foreign religion and influence. The war took place between 1899 and 1901. When the Eight-Nation Alliance won the war, the Boxer Protocol was enforced which called for any government officials who supported the Boxer rebellion, foreign troops to be stationed in Beijing, and 450 taels of silver- which in 2017 is equivalent to $10 billion dollars- to be paid over the next thirty-nine years to the eight nations that were involved in the war.
